Until now, scientists have only been able to detect the existence of extrasolar planet (planets that orbit stars other than ours) due to their gravitational effect on their host star or the dimming of the star’s light as the planet passes in front of it. Any additional details, like chemical makeup or surface features, remain unknown; however, scientists can make educated guesses. Last week, NASA announced that the Hubble Space Telescope was able to determine the color of an extrasolar planet for the very first time!
