In the famous Romanian province of Cluj-Napoca (long associated with the legend of Dracula), researcher Dr. Radu Silaghi-Dumitrescu and his team found an artificial blood formula. After many years of experimenting with artificial blood formulas on mice, a formula was finally created that had no negative side effects. With this new revolutionary discovery, the next step is to test the new formula on humans. Artificial blood can act as a temporary substitute for blood.
This formula is produced using hemerythrin which is actually a protein removed from sea worms and then mixed with salts and water. While hemoglobin is what transfers oxygen in the blood of most living creatures, hemerythrin is what transports oxygen in marine invertebrates. Hemerythrin was also discovered to be more resistant to the stress of a transfusion than hemoglobin.
Dr. Radu Silaghi-Dumitrescu would like to eventually have “instant blood” that would be available by simply adding water to a portable tube to produce the artificial blood formula. This would make blood more accessible for medical needs.
How do you think that this new formula could transform the medical field if found successful in humans?
