Arizona Science Center Collaborates on a Giant Screen Filmmaking Workshop with Arizona State University

Science Center Teamed Up with ASU's Sidney Poitier New American Film School and Industry Filmmakers for Three-Day Mentorship Seminar

Phoenix, AZ –– In early December, Arizona Science Center hosted 15 ASU students for a Giant Screen Filmmaking Mentorship Workshop. The three-day seminar focused on science and nature filmmaking, using the recently completed documentary Jane Goodall - Reasons for Hope as a case study. The workshop was developed and presented by production teams from Science North, Arizona Science Center and The Sidney Poitier New American Film School. Students analyzed and explored elements of filmmaking including the industry standard camera, sound, production equipment and digital technologies.

The weekend course, Giant Screen Filmmaking – A Primer, was brought to Sidney Poitier New American Film School students film students for an opportunity to learn from Film Director David Lickley, Director of Photography Reed Smoot and other members of their production team. The course work began with screenings of several 2D and 3D films, the origins and history of the production of giant screen filmmaking, and the present and future of giant filmmaking from a technical perspective.

In addition to the physical aspects of production and filmmaking, students were also allowed to learn about the logistics or “business” of film. Learning the process of ideation, pitching, funding and planning the production in a large-screen format allows for a more well-rounded production team.

Throughout the weekend, students had the opportunity to learn from five expert guest instructors. David Lickley, a film director who has over 40 nature films under his belt. Director of Photography Reed Smoot, the most experienced director of photography in the giant screen film business, Mic Waugh, a local camera operator in the industry also showcased how to uniquely shoot for a creative and aesthetic visual story. Brenda Tremblay, COO at Science North with experience as a producer. Lastly, Guy Labine, The Hazel A. Hare President & CEO, Arizona Science Center and Co-Executive Producer of Large Format Films.

“I’m thrilled we were able to include this work with ASU as an extended benefit of our involvement in this project. We look forward to our partnership with the talented faculty and students at ASU to develop new engaging and exciting media content for our visitors” added Guy Labine.
