San Luis High School Graduate Receives Women in STEM Scholarship from Arizona Science Center

Scholarship Is Named In Honor Of STEM Advocate And Former Museum Leader Chevy Humphrey

PHOENIX, July 2, 2024– The Chevy Humphrey Women in STEM Scholarship was awarded to Anelys Romo Herrera, a graduate of San Luis High School. Funded by the Helios Education Foundation, the scholarship is in honor of Chevy Humphrey, a longtime, former Hazel A. Hare President and CEO of Arizona Science Center and an ongoing advocate for science education for all.

Anelys aims to serve as a role model, particularly as a woman in STEM, pursuing a career as an environmental engineer with the United States Department of Agriculture. Her ambition is to return to San Luis after completing her college education and make significant contributions to her community.

“I want to set an example for not only future generations in my family but also for my town,” said Anelys Romo Herrera. “It is harder to even think of going to college when there aren't even enough jobs to get money in my town, to even pay for basic living utilities. I want to prove that mentality wrong by setting an example and giving back.”

The scholarship includes a one-time award of $2,000 and one year of mentoring services from Education Forward Arizona. This organization supports students in Arizona, especially those from low-income backgrounds and students of color, to continue their education after high school. The scholarship recipient can use the money for tuition, books or room and board at any Arizona institution of higher education.

"By fostering an inclusive environment that encourages young women to pursue careers in STEM, we are investing in the innovators and leaders of tomorrow," said Guy Labine, The Hazel A. Hare President & CEO of Arizona Science Center. "Arizona Science Center and The Chevy Humphrey Women in STEM Scholarship is dedicated to providing the resources, support, and inspiration needed to ensure talented individuals, like Anelys, can thrive and make a lasting impact."

According to Microsoft, only 6.7% of all women graduating from college have a STEM degree, although women make up 53% of the total number of degrees earned. The Chevy Humphrey Women in STEM Scholarship is one small step toward closing this gap.
